Real Estate In Southern Arizona

Willcox Arizona Real Estate

Incorporated in 1915, Willcox is one of Arizona’s oldest communities, dating back to 1880, when it was a whistle stop for the Southern Pacific Railroad. Originally known as Maley, the town was renamed in honor of an 1889 visit by renowned U.S. Army General Orlando B. Willcox. Today, Interstate 10 has replaced the railroad as Wilcox’s main transportation link, although trains still pass through this scenic desert town every day. Wilcox is located in Cochise County about 60 miles east of Tucson.

The town’s railway days are still exemplified in many of its houses. Wilcox real estate features homes that often buck the state-wide trend of low lying Sonora and Santa Fe designs in favor of a two storey Old West Victorian look, complete with classic large covered front porches to keep the heat off. Property here is very affordable, starting at under $200,000, although you’ll find quite a few luxury listings in this market as well.

With an elevation above sea level of more than 4,000 feet, Willcox, Arizona is a high desert community, and has a milder year round climate than the state’s low-lying cities. Because of the climate, hundreds of bird species make their home in vegetation surrounding Willcox. Indeed, the Cochise County area is known as the birding capital of the world. For a scenic drive, follow the Cochise Loop south of town into the Chiricahua National Monument and the "Wonderland of Rocks," an area of the Coronado National Forest boasting some truly astonishing rock formations, and historic Fort Bowie, an abandoned 19th century colonial outpost.
