San Manuel sits next to one of the most important desert rivers in the world, the San Pedro, which flows north from the Sonora Mountains of Mexico into Arizona. As it winds through the Southwest, the river valley creates a ribbon of green amid the brown desert, supporting thousands of species of plants and animals, including humans who have inhabited this region for thousands of years. The area of San Manuel has yielded many archeological finds that have been useful in piecing together early human inhabitations of North America, particularly in nearby Mammoth.
