Rio Rico is a culturally diverse town of about 6,000 just north of Nogales, where Mexican influence and Spanish architecture abound and pesos are accepted just as readily as dollars. The town’s name is Spanish for “River Ranch,” and through Rio Rico flows the Santa Cruz River, a seasonal river that lies dry during the summer, but in winter adds a sparkle of blue to the sun soaked land all around it. Ranches and farms line the riverbed, as well as comfortable, affordable homes that are among the Arizona real estate market’s best kept secret. Rio Rico is also the site of stunning Pena Blanca Lake, a 45 acre oasis where heat-weary travelers from Tucson and Phoenix come to fish and swim year round.
